  • Researchers at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in Naples are investigating how Burmese pythons spread 25 seeds (native and nonnative) across the Everglades as they manage the invasive population, having removed over 2,100 pounds last month.  WINK News
  • South Florida Fire & Aviation will conduct prescribed burns in Big Cypress National Preserve over the coming months on 4 treatment units covering 81,002 acres. Temporary closures will be implemented for visitor safety, with updates shared via press releases and road signs.  WGCU

  • A Publix (Immokalee Road) in Naples sold a quick pick Florida Lotto Double Play ticket on Jan. 7 that won $250,000, though it did not claim the $14 million jackpot set for Jan. 10.  Naples Daily News

  • Governor Ron DeSantis appointed Jim Drzymala and Douglas VanOort as new members and reappointed Joseph Fogg III to the FGCU Board of Trustees on Thursday (pending Senate confirmation).  WGCU
  • Lee County DOT announced that Big Carlos Pass Bridge will see intermittent closures on Monday, Jan. 12, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. so crews can set final bridge beams for Span 1 near Estero Island — motorists should expect delays and choose alternate routes.  WGCU
