COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Naples held its 49th annual St. Patrick's Day parade on Saturday, March 15—honoring local military members with a flag-raising ceremony and a tribute led by grand marshal Dale Mullin. More than 40,000 spectators watched bands, floats and other events during the largest privately-funded parade in the state.  NBC2

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A wrong-way driver drove off the I-75 on-ramp near Immokalee Road in Naples, raising safety concerns among drivers while another wrong-way driver caused a crash near Golden Gate Parkway and Premier Drive on Friday night that led to two trauma alerts under active investigation.  NBC2
  • A teenage boy died in a crash at Lakeland Avenue and Madison Avenue in the Willoughby Acres neighborhood in North Naples—troopers arrived at about 5:10 p.m. on March 15—after an SUV hit an e-bike.  NBC2

CRIME NEWS

  • Robert James Luther III, a Bonita Springs man, was arrested for animal cruelty and aggravated stalking after neighbors reported finding two severed cat heads in their mailbox and deputies secured search warrants when he acted suspiciously during interviews—he remains in jail.  WINK News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Celebrations over the weekend brought festive cheer to Southwest Florida as Bonita Springs hosted a Biergarten at Riverside Park on Friday and Saturday and Cape Coral held beer festivals serving German cuisine and live music—Naples residents joined the free annual parade along 5th Avenue on Saturday at 11 a.m. Community members look forward to celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day on Monday.  WGCU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The von Arx Wildlife Hospital cared for two crested caracaras after one was found weak with a 9% red blood cell count—likely from rodenticide poisoning—and treated it with fluids and vitamin K. Both birds have been released back to the wild as part of ongoing wildlife care in the area.  Conservancy of Southwest Florida
  • Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced that it will be illegal to remove bats from your attic, barn or shed after April 15 as bats stay protected during their mating season from April 16 to August 14—check your building for entry points and install proper exclusion devices before these dates to comply with the law.  News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Barron Collier, a self-made advertising leader from Tennessee, changed a wild area by starting the region’s first newspaper, telephone and power companies and a bus line—he also helped complete the Tamiami Trail and bought large tracts of land that became Collier County. His work laid the foundation for growth in our community today.  Naples Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The FGCU women’s basketball team beat Central Arkansas 68-51 to clinch its eighth straight ASUN Championship and earn an NCAA Tournament berth. The Eagles built a 14-point lead by halftime—Emani Jefferson led with 15 points—and they will learn their first round matchup on Selection Sunday at 8 p.m.  WINK News
