COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Housing Alliance, a new group that helps people find safe homes in Collier County, announced it received a $200,000 grant from the Collier Community Foundation to fund its 2025 operations. The funds will expand its offices in Naples and Immokalee—improving reporting, fundraising and affordable housing services.  Coastal Breeze News
  • Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center will host a free Community Day on May 3, offering kayak demos+boat rides, eco-crafts+face painting, a photobooth, a new art exhibit by Florida Gulf Coast University students, food trucks and hands-on marine life experiences for visitors. The event will also let people learn about conservation and research at the Reserve that covers 40% of Collier County's shoreline.  Life In Naples

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the 32nd Southwest Florida Model UN competition held at FGCU in March, over 200 students from 18 high schools competed as Gulf Coast High awarded scholarships including a $2,000 prize to senior Isabella Lala for best single year performance—bringing total awards to about $60,000. FGCU and the Naples Council on World Affairs partnered to host the event, which relied on more than 120 community volunteers.  Florida Weekly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Florida offers many choices for eco-friendly biking, walking and running along its scenic trails and parks. Collier County will soon start building a 100-mile Paradise Coast Trail that connects Naples to Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Collier Seminole State Park, Ave Maria and Everglades City — it will also serve as the southern starting point for the 420-mile GulfCoast Trail and the 220-mile Collier to Polk Trail.  Life In Naples

HEALTH NEWS

  • David Lawrence Centers will break ground on a new Behavioral Health Center near Bathey Lane that will nearly triple the number of adults receiving crisis care—part of the $160 million Hope for Collier plan to address the growing mental health crisis. The center will offer more bed capacity for care under the Baker Act and Marchman Act, ensuring that more community members can access help when needed.  Life In Naples
  • Demolition began yesterday at the Telford Education Center on the NCH Baker campus in downtown Naples to clear the site for the Schulze Family Cardiovascular and Stroke Critical Care Center — the new facility for advanced heart care. NCH officials said the project will support enhanced treatment for heart and stroke patients.  News-Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 29th Terra Cotta Invitational will run from Friday through Sunday at Naples National Golf Club with 75 top amateur golfers including defending champion Luke Colton, who will try to repeat his win—donations from the free ticket event will go to a local children’s charity. The public is welcome to attend as the tournament showcases junior, mid-amateur and collegiate talent.  News-Press
