- ➤ The National Hurricane Center confirmed Hurricane Milton as one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record—it reached Category 5 over the Atlantic before making landfall in Florida as a Category 3 hurricane that caused widespread damage in Sarasota, Tampa Bay, and Southwest Florida. The storm resulted in 15 direct deaths and about $34.3 billion in damage and featured a severe tornado outbreak with 45 tornadoes reported across the Florida Peninsula. News-Press
