- ➤ Collier County veterans received $9 million in federal funding for a one-stop community center at VFW Post 7721. The center (planned near the former Golden Gate Golf Course) will offer food, health care, legal and housing services and is expected to finish in summer 2030. WINK News
- ➤ Bonita Springs' Sanjuan Family Nursery now welcomes residents to shop for palms, flowering plants, and landscaping essentials. The family-run nursery, located along a busy road, offers guided tours and a pollination station (supporting local pollinators) to help visitors design thriving gardens. WINK News
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Marco Movies, a cherished local theater that opened in 1993, closed on April 7 after 32 years of showing first-run films & offering a unique dining experience, drawing hundreds of nostalgic comments online. - ➤ Record Store Day 2026 will take place on Saturday, April 18 at independent record stores across Florida with Bruno Mars serving as ambassador and hundreds of exclusive vinyl releases available (including a special vinyl single from Taylor Swift). - ➤ On April 1, Robert Busscher, a stone crabber off Sanibel, harvested legal-size crab claws by clipping them and returning the live crabs to the water to let them regrow & he said this season has been one of the best for stone crab claws in Southwest Florida. Naples Daily News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Florida environmental data show that red tide is not present in local waters as of April 7, offering safe beach conditions today; experts remind residents that Karenia brevis blooms are more common in summer and fall (monitoring will continue). Naples Daily News
- ➤ Officials are considering a dynamic system for hurricane watches and warnings as forecasts become more accurate, which would give residents and emergency managers extra time to prepare based on storm severity. Extended notice may offer customized alert times for different types of storms. Naples Daily News
- ➤ On April 7, a federal appeals panel heard arguments on whether Alligator Alcatraz, an immigration detention center in Big Cypress National Preserve, must undergo a federal environmental review before operations continue.
