  • Longtime Naples resident Vincent Keeys (Collier NAACP president) received the 2025 Distinguished Leadership Award from Greater Naples Leadership on March 24 at Sugden Community Theatre, honoring his work assisting underserved communities after Hurricane Ian and through local civic groups.  News-Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Naples Mayor Teresa Heitmann will appear in court on May 21 after her August arrest for allegedly driving under the influence following a failed field sobriety test and reportedly blowing twice the legal limit.  WINK News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Frazar Henry is a young composer in Naples who began his music journey early—his piece 'Seas of Glass' was performed by the Gulf Coast Symphony on March 29th at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall. He is now a first-year student at Oberlin Conservatory and plans to work as a pianist and composer in the future.  Florida Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four students from Aubrey Rogers High School won the regional Academic WorldQuest competition at Community School of Naples — beating 84 students from 21 teams — and will compete in the national round in Washington, D.C. on April 28.  Florida Weekly
  • The Immokalee Foundation supports students from kindergarten through postsecondary education by running programs like Immokalee Readers and Career Pathways, with first grader Ailiyah among the over 700 elementary students who benefit from after-school literacy. The initiative helps young people gain reading skills and professional training—backed by generous Southwest Florida donors—to prepare them for future careers.  Florida Weekly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The wildlife hospital at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida admitted 53 young Virginia opossums in the past two weeks and is treating 40 after injuries from vehicle strikes, dog attacks, and orphaning. A woman walking her dog rescued five joeys from a dead opossum’s moving pouch—staff warmed and fed the joeys—while the hospital gives them special care.  Conservancy of Southwest Florida
  • HB 1175/SB 492 is a bill under review in Tallahassee that would let developers use credits from banks outside local watersheds to offset the loss of our wetlands, which provide water filtration and habitat for wildlife. The bill would allow up to 60% of credits to be sold before any new wetlands are built—raising fears that vital benefits for south Florida may be lost.  Conservancy of Southwest Florida

  • Anne Foster (who served on the Community Services Advisory Board from 2015 to 2024) received the Sam Noe Award (for improving Charlie C. Anthony Park) during a March City Council meeting in Naples.  News-Press

  • On April 16, the Community School of Naples boys lacrosse team beat Barron Collier at CSN to capture the Class 1A-District 12 title—earning them the district crown.  News-Press
