- ➤ JCPenney will close 7 stores on or before May 25 — none of Florida's 44 locations will close and a Maryland store will now operate until Aug. 31. The company is changing after filing for bankruptcy in May 2020 and joining with Forever 21 to start Catalyst Brands. News-Press
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The latest drought monitor shows that severe drought has expanded and fire danger is high across southwestern Florida because of very low humidity and dry air. Officials say that higher humidity starting Easter Sunday will help ease the fire threat—no rain is forecast for the week. NBC2
FINANCE NEWS
- ➤ Taxpayers who missed the April 15 deadline for filing their 2024 returns now face a 5% monthly penalty for not filing and a 0.5% penalty for late payments, with the overall penalty capped at 5% per month—officials urge filing as soon as possible to stop extra fees. Floridians, including those in disaster areas, have until May 1 to file their returns and avoid additional charges. News-Press

- ➤ FC Naples fought the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup third round at Paradise Coast Sports Complex where 3,418 fans watched a 1—1 tie decided by a 10-round penalty shootout that ended 9–8 in favor of Tampa Bay.
