BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Washington Prime Group, which owns 70 malls in the U.S. (10 in Florida), announced it will sell all its properties after selling about half in 2024 and plans to lay off 139 workers at its Ohio headquarters starting June 2 with layoffs finishing by March 31. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2021 and is reducing its portfolio as part of its reorganization. Naples Daily News

- ➤ Authorities issued a warrant for Antonio Licout, 19, after the April 10 shooting death of teenager Aaliyah Gonzalez, 18—sheriff’s deputies confirmed that a nearby elementary school was placed on alert but posed no threat. News-Press
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Naples City Council approved a $125,000 project for ADA-compliant upgrades at Naples Pier, Lowdermilk Park, and Vedado Way Beach to help people with disabilities access the beaches safely. City leaders say the improvements, including wider sidewalks and outdoor showers (blue mats will be replaced) will be finished by early June (project funds are already allocated). Fox 4
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Jessica Rodriguez from the American Heart Association explained that nearly half of women 20 and older have heart disease, which is the top killer among women. The Southwest Florida Go Red for Women luncheon will be held May 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón—tickets are still available. NBC2
- ➤ Pediatric nurse and mother Jasmine Barbuto died in April after suffering cardiac arrest and her donated organs—two kidneys and her liver—saved three lives. Her family, including her husband Blaine, a deputy, remembers her as a caring and selfless figure whose legacy lives on. WINK News
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Canterbury girls lacrosse turned last season’s loss around on Thursday night by beating Saint Stephen’s 10+6 to move past the regional quarterfinals for the first time. Senior captain Kaya Langford and seventh-grader Isabel Corwen led the Cougars as they prepare to either host Naples or travel to face Bradenton Christian on April 29, depending on the Friday matchup. - ➤ The Minto US Open Pickleball Championships will begin tomorrow at East Naples Community Park and run until May 3, drawing 3,450 players from all 50 states and over 40 countries. Notable athletes such as tennis star Ivan Lendl, former NFL player Danny Wuerffel and wheelchair competitor Robert Doyle will join the tournament — a sign that the sport is growing in appeal.
