COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marco Lutheran Church Foundation awarded $30,000 to Our Daily Bread Food Pantry to support its work helping neighbors access nutritious food. The grant will fund two days of kid-friendly meals for 230 students at Manatee Elementary School.  Coastal Breeze News

CRIME NEWS

  • Three Naples men are indicted in connection with a murder-for-hire plot in which one reportedly hired them to kill a man for $30,000—law enforcement said the men exchanged phone calls and met at a Naples grocery store parking lot on April 17 before being arrested.  ABC7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lee County reopened Causeway Islands Park on Sanibel on May 1, restoring public access with free parking and portable restrooms after Hurricane Ian damaged the site in September 2022. The county is planning Phase Two improvements—such as structured parking and enhanced beach access—with design completion expected this summer while rangers and volunteers protect nesting shorebirds.  News-Press
  • Drivers passing through Big Carlos Pass now see major construction underway — more than half of the new bridge has been built since construction began in summer 2023, and it will replace the narrow old span with a safer design. The project will finish in summer 2026 and may open to traffic by spring — renderings show it will include bike lanes, a wider sidewalk and a 10-foot shared-use path.  NBC2

HEALTH NEWS

  • Children and young adults in Collier County face increasing stress and academic anxieties that affect their mental health, and David Lawrence Centers for Behavioral Health is expanding its prevention & education programs to help build stronger minds. The center served nearly 9,000 school-aged children in fiscal 2024 and offers programs like Second Step and Parenting Teens to provide essential coping skills.  Life In Naples
  • North Collier Fire and Rescue introduced an animated water safety video on Thursday that features Firefighter Frank and his canine partner Tank teaching children basic safety to prevent drownings. The video comes as summer nears and follows recent drowning deaths+non-fatal incidents, with officials urging parents to closely watch children and use Coast Guard-approved life jackets.  WINK News
  • On May 1st, NCH Rooney Heart Institute completed a clinical trial of the Affera Mapping and Ablation System featuring the Sphere-9 Catheter—one of only two Florida sites using this technology for treating atrial fibrillation and related arrhythmias.
