Good morning, Naples. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 4th of May.
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Singer Deniece Williams visited Naples and attended the Pace Center for Girls’ Crazy Pantz fundraiser at The Players Club & Spa on April 30, where she performed hits including 'Let's Hear It For The Boy' and 'God Is Amazing.' The four-time Grammy winner (turning 75 in June) said she was honored by the event and will finish a book and record one more album with longtime music friends. News-Press
- ➤ Keewaydin Island, once known as Kee Island, was a winter retreat with a school and popular camps in the 1890s (locals stopped a road and bridge from being built to protect the island). Today the island is 80% public land that hosts private homes and wildlife, with conservation efforts led by Rookery Bay Reserve (historic properties include a home once shared by the Biden family). - ➤ On April 1 just after sunrise, photojournalist Andrew West captured an osprey catching a fish at the Bailey Tract of the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island—he said perfect light from behind him made the clean background highlight the bird—while he was covering a story on wading birds. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law Friday that creates new hurdles for the citizens’ initiative process by requiring petition circulators to register, imposing strict deadlines and fines, and making it a felony to collect too many signatures from non-family members—critics say the changes will raise costs and block grassroots campaigns from getting measures on the ballot. The law also bars noncitizens, non-residents and Floridians with unresolved felony convictions from gathering signatures and outlaws using public funds for political ads on proposed constitutional amendments.
