COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On April 26, the Noontime Rotary Club of Marco Island held its 15th annual Spirit of Marco Island Awards Dinner at Island Country Club to honor community leaders such as Scot and Pat Kaufman, Stephen and Barbara Slaggie, and councilor Deb Henry—recognized for extensive service—and raise funds for local causes. The Elegant Garden Gala raised over $70,000 through a cash appeal to fund Lorenzo Walker Technical College’s new nursing program that will ease the local nurse shortage.  Coastal Breeze News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An alligator attacked goats at Funny Bunches of Goats in Golden Gate Estates last week—killing one goat named Riding Hood and injuring another named Mojito, who was rescued by owner Sarah Pershing—and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers trapped the reptile.  WINK News

CRIME NEWS

  • On Monday, 89-year-old Robert Markel and his dog were fatally attacked near State Road 29 and U.S. 41 while three black bears were killed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission—DNA samples from the scene have been sent to Gainesville for testing as the investigation continues.  WGCU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Community Foundation's School Uniform Campaign is nearing a $250,000 goal to cover two years of uniform costs for elementary and middle school students; a $50 donation outfits one student and $600 supplies a classroom. The drive has raised $231,301.71 as of May 6th to benefit approximately (3,300) low-income students and will end soon.  News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Travelers without a REAL ID at Southwest Florida International Airport will face extra screenings, the Department of Homeland Security announced. Officials advise passengers to plan ahead and use other accepted IDs — like a passport or Trusted Traveler credential — to verify their identity.  WINK News
  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will sign a bill today that bans geoengineering and weather modification activities— the law also makes violations felonies and creates an online reporting system for residents.  News-Press
  • On May 5th, the Marco Island City Council heard an unsolicited proposal from EarthWerks Land Improvement and Development Corporation to form a Public-Private Partnership for dredging canals to improve water quality — the council voted to authorize an independent technical review by an external engineer with study costs paid by the proposers. The proposal, which includes a dredging cost of $60 million, is posted on the City’s website.  Coastal Breeze News

  • CSN boys and girls lacrosse teams have reached the Final Four together and will play state semifinal games at Paradise Coast Sports Complex. The boys face Benjamin at 7:30 p.m. today while the girls take on American Heritage at 7:30 p.m. Friday—both contests deciding who moves on to the state championship.  Naples Daily News
