  • A Naples court ruled that the outdoor drag show and Pride Fest can go on at Cambier Park on June 7 — the ruling stops city interference by allowing the event without age limits or permit cancellations while requiring a $100 bond and upholding First Amendment rights.  WINK News
  • The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Wiggins Pass Flotilla will host National Safe Boating Week events from May 17 through May 23 to teach boat safety in Southwest Florida — local activities include an open house at Vanderbilt Drive in Naples on May 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a kayak rescue workshop in Naples on May 18.  WGCU

  • Naples Ballet will perform Sleeping Beauty at Hayes Hall at Artis Naples at 7 p.m. on May 15 — Gulfshore Opera will present its Journey Through the Americas concert series across outdoor venues from May 14 to May 18, featuring the GO Divas and Latin Infusion.  WGCU

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Drivers in Florida paid the lowest gas prices on Sunday as the statewide average dropped to $2.93 per gallon, down 17 cents from last week and 54 cents from last year, AAA said. Fears of a trade war causing a recession had eased but rising oil prices—after increasing 5% last week—could push pump prices higher soon.  Fox 4

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida’s school districts have set last days of school between May 22 and June 5, with most counties finishing the week after Memorial Day on May 26 and some students ending the year in early June. State lawmakers are reviewing plans to delay middle and high school start times next year because cost concerns and bus driver shortages have prompted feedback—2025 will also include 12 federal holidays with Inauguration Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day overlapping.  News-Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sara Crosby, founder of Keira's Kougars Care Inc., told Gulf Coast News that her nonprofit helps families pay for tests, scans, and treatments for brain cancer. She started the group after her daughter Keira died from the disease and now works during Brain Cancer Awareness Month when 93,000 people will be diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2025 — offering support to ease costly medical bills.  ABC7
