- ➤ On May 5, a black bear fatally attacked 89-year-old Robert Markel and his dog near his camper on State Road 29 in Jerome, Collier County, prompting wildlife officials to kill three bears that evening— officials will meet May 21 to discuss a proposed bear hunt as safety concerns grow.
