ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On May 5, a black bear fatally attacked 89-year-old Robert Markel and his dog near his camper on State Road 29 in Jerome, Collier County, prompting wildlife officials to kill three bears that evening— officials will meet May 21 to discuss a proposed bear hunt as safety concerns grow.  Coastal Breeze News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The U.S. Small Business Administration is offering Economic Injury Disaster Loans to Florida small businesses—along with agricultural cooperatives, nurseries, and nonprofits—that lost revenue due to the drought. Loans of up to $2 million with low interest rates and repayment terms of up to 30 years are available, and applications must be submitted by Dec. 8.  ABC7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Alligator mating season is causing more gators to appear in yards, porches and pools in Naples, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program will remove gators that threaten residents (call 866-392-4286 for free removal). Residents are advised to keep a safe distance and never feed alligators (which can lead to dangerous encounters) during this time.  Naples Daily News
