EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Collier County Public Schools named the district’s future elementary school Ave Maria Elementary School after a survey that received 329 responses. The school will be built on Anthem Parkway in Ave Maria (about five miles north of Oil Well Road) and a mascot survey will run (today to May 25) while construction begins in June and a principal is chosen in September ahead of an August opening. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ May 15 was the start of the rainy season, which means hurricane season is nearly here. Sunshine Ace Hardware advised locals to buy generators, flashlights, batteries, and enough food and water for three days—helping families get ready for power outages and severe storms—so they can stay safe. ABC7
- ➤ The U.S. Drought Monitor from May 15 shows slight improvement inland as extreme drought still affects most of southwest Florida — counties in Glades, Hendry, DeSoto, and eastern Charlotte fell to severe drought while Lee, Collier, and western Charlotte remain at extreme levels. Recent rains brought 1 to 3 inches to some areas, but little rainfall is expected through May 25, and burn bans remain in effect along with new water rules in Cape Coral. NBC2
- ➤ The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the South Florida Water Management District announced that the Florida Python Challenge will run from 12:01 a.m. on July 11 to 5 p.m. on July 20 to remove invasive Burmese pythons on seven commission-managed lands—participants can win a top prize of 10,000 dollars by catching the most snakes. - ➤ On May 15, the Canterbury School Cougars beat St. Johns Country Day 6—2 at Lee Health Sports Complex to win their fourth state baseball title in the past decade and first title since 2018.
