Good morning, Naples. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 20th of May.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 47-year-old Naples woman died at the scene of a head-on collision on State Road 31 in DeSoto County early Monday morning — the 24-year-old Estero man reportedly crossed the center line to pass another vehicle — and he was taken to a hospital in critical condition.  ABC7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • American Airlines contacted Naples Airport on May 15 to explore adding flights, but the board decided not to offer any incentives due to a strict 75,000-pound limit on aircraft—making a return to regular service unlikely, and marking a shift from the last commercial flights in 2017.  Naples Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida lawmakers have not agreed on tax cut plans and risk a government shutdown if they do not pass a state budget before July 1. Gov. DeSantis wants to cut property taxes while House Speaker Perez favors lowering the sales tax and Senate President Albritton’s proposal remains stalled (the House session now runs until June 30 and the Senate aims to finish by June 6).  Naples Daily News
  • Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is considering a bear hunt that could become an annual event after an attack in Collier County killed 89-year-old Robert Markel and his dog. The commission will discuss the plan on Wednesday and if approved will allow a three-week hunt in December with 187 permits issued—55 for Lee, Collier and Hendry counties—and public comments closed Friday.  WINK News
  • Naples City Council voted unanimously on Friday to appeal a federal judge's ruling that allowed drag performances at Pride Fest, but as of Monday no appeal paperwork has been filed with the U.S. District Court in Fort Myers—leaving the city racing against time as the outdoor event is scheduled for June 7 at Cambier Park.  ABC7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Florida’s summer heat is reaching near-record levels as extreme heat warnings have been issued to protect residents from heat stroke and exhaustion—local authorities urge keeping air conditioners running and avoiding prolonged sun exposure. Residents are also advised to recognize the signs of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke and to take preventive measures to stay safe.  Naples Daily News
