Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 23rd of May.
Good morning, Naples.
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center issued its outlook forecasting an above-normal 2025 Atlantic hurricane season with a 60% chance of heightened activity and 13-19 named storms (6-10 hurricanes and 3-5 major hurricanes) due to warmer waters and the absence of El Niño.
Naples residents are advised to inspect their properties and gather emergency supplies as the season runs from June 1-Nov. 30.
On May 21st, FWC voted in a 4-to-1 decision to advance proposals for a new black bear hunt later this year (including options such as hunting with dogs and special landowner opportunities).
Conservationists warned the new rules may harm an already imperiled bear subpopulation near the South-Central unit.
Florida-based PennRose Farms has voluntarily recalled 1,152 cases of mesh bag cucumbers supplied by Fresh Start Produce Sales and Bedner Growers after the produce was packaged between May 2 and May 5 (UPC code 841214101714) and sent to Restaurant Depot centers in several states.
This recall adds to an ongoing salmonella outbreak that has sickened 26 people in 15 states.
Dr. Stephen Leatherman, also known as Dr. Beach, released his top ten U.S. beaches for 2025, ranking Coopers Beach in Southampton first and Florida's Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park in Naples fourth.
He also placed Wailea Beach in Hawaii second and Poipu Beach in Hawaii third, with other destinations rounding out his list.
Dr. Beach ranked Naples’ Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park as the fourth best beach in the US for 2025 due to its clear water, white sand, and safe facilities, and he compared 650 beaches using 50 factors (like water quality and safety) after the park reopened in February following hurricane damage.
Estero High senior Lily Jason won the Southwest Florida Courage Award for her strong play on the soccer field after losing her father in December.
She led her team to its first regional final since 2020 and will be honored on May 29 at Suncoast Credit Union Arena — her journey shows how she turned grief into determination.
