- ➤ The National Hurricane Center is tracking two tropical waves in the Atlantic — one that left Africa earlier this week and a second that moved off on May 23 — and forecasters do not expect any cyclone activity over the next seven days. NOAA and other experts predict an above-average hurricane season with 13—19 named storms, and residents are advised to prepare since hurricane season begins on June 1. News-Press
- ➤ Scientists tracked algae mats in Sanibel since May 16, and Dr. Rick Bartleson from the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation said extra nutrients from septic systems are hurting sea grass and fish. He warned that lower oxygen in the water may cut local tourism and jobs—fixing the problem will require costly updates that need state help. Fox 4
- ➤ A wildfire in Picayune Strand State Forest burned 250 acres and is 90% contained after three days of efforts as crews and multiple agencies continue to battle active hot spots—thick smoke still affects East Naples while a burn ban remains in effect in Lee and Collier counties due to drought. - ➤ The city of Naples filed an appeal on May 22 to pause a May 12 ruling that allowed an outdoor drag show at Cambier Park during Naples Pride Fest on June 7—arguing the event could expose children to the performance and risk public safety—while Naples Pride said its free speech rights protect the show and it will continue unless stopped by the court.
