CRIME NEWS

  • The Collier County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday arrested Olga Murphy, 62, and Igor Mursalimov, 54, at their Marco Island home after rescuing 57 cats from poor conditions and discovering 15–20 dead cats in a freezer, charging them with felony animal cruelty.  WINK News
  • Idris Kennord Walters, 46, was convicted in Collier County on June 11 for trafficking cocaine after officers stopped his vehicle and he tossed drugs out the window — his sentencing is scheduled for June 16.  NBC2

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UF/IFAS professor Steve Johnson said Florida’s native snakes — about 50 species including 6 venomous ones — are active year-round with many breeding during warmer months, and he advised residents to observe them from a safe distance to avoid bites.  WGCU
  • A female Burmese python was caught near Everglades City on May 31 and measured 16 feet 8 inches using two tape measures while weighing 105 pounds. Registration for the Florida Python Challenge runs from July 11 to July 20—offering cash prizes for efforts to remove invasive pythons.  Naples Daily News
  • With the rain returning, Southwest Florida will soon see a surge in mosquitoes that were dormant during the drought—Lee County Mosquito Control is preparing measures to manage the expected increase, as WGCU reporter Jennifer Crawford noted.  WGCU

HEALTH NEWS

  • Florida veterans are finding healing among rescued wolves and other exotic animals at the Shy Wolf Sanctuary in eastern Collier County through the Healing Hearts program run with Home Base. The program helps veterans cope with PTSD, brain injuries, and substance abuse while they bond with animals rescued from abuse (a unique therapy for those who served).  Fox 4

  • Florida law permits HOAs to use a credit card for paying expenses but bans debit cards to protect funds—this rule was clarified by attorney Lee-Anne Bosch. She also explains that meeting minutes must be concise and that board gatherings for property observation require proper notice while committee rules vary by governing documents.  Naples Daily News
