CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities said a Marco Island couple, Olga Murphy and Igor Mursalimov, face 28 new counts of animal confinement after a June 11 inspection found 57 living cats in distress and between 15 and 20 dead cats stored in their home—these charges add to existing felony animal cruelty charges and their arraignment is set for July 7.  News-Press
  • A former Lee County sheriff's deputy was sentenced to 6 months in jail after he fired from a vehicle near Gold Forever Jewelry in Lehigh Acres on June 30th, and he faces six years of probation plus conditions including firearm forfeiture and mandatory anger management, substance abuse, and mental health evaluations.  News-Press

  • The 11th Circuit Court ruled less than 24 hours before Naples Pridefest opened that the marquee Drag Extravaganza be held indoors at Cambier Park, and the festival continued with its planned celebrations. Organizers quickly adjusted to the legal decision—ensuring the event maintained its festive spirit.  WGCU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a Collier County meeting, the Florida Department of Transportation said it will widen I-75 and add a diverging diamond interchange near Immokalee Road to ease traffic between Collier and Lee counties. The project will roll out in four phases from 2027 to 2031 and a public hearing is set for Aug. 14th, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. at North Collier Regional Park—focusing on safety and smoother travel.  Naples Daily News
  • Florida lawmakers approved a $115.1 billion spending plan after the Senate voted unanimously and the House gave a 103 to 2 approval, finishing their session late Monday. The budget will take effect on July 1 and includes $1.3 billion in tax cuts and pay raises for state employees—though it remains subject to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ vetoes.  ABC7
