COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The historic Great Canoe Races of Naples returned on Saturday with five races at Baker Park on the Gordon River, marking the first race since 2020 with nearly 65 paddlers and vendors. Organized by the Young Professionals of Naples, the event used a new upstream course to reduce boat traffic — and proceeds will benefit the Conservancy.  Coastal Breeze News

  • Acclaimed Sonoma County Chef-Vintner Dustin Valette will be honored as Chef de Cuisine at the Naples Winter Wine Festival from January 30 through February 1 at The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón – he will join other celebrated chefs and vintners as the event supports local children through the Naples Children & Education Foundation.  Life In Naples

  • The Village School plans to invest over $3 million to upgrade its athletic programs and facilities — the project will enhance training spaces and boost sports opportunities in the coming months.  Naples Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Moorings Property Owners Association approved license plate reader cameras at three entrances along U.S. 41—supported by 77% of 1,400 homeowners who ranked safety as their top concern—to aid local law enforcement in criminal investigations. The $110,000 cameras will be maintained for five years using funds leftover from the Moorings Beach Park rebuild after Hurricane Milton, with installation plans still pending.  ABC7
  • At its meeting yesterday at 8:30 a.m., the Naples City Council reviewed a proposal for a utility rate hike—if approved, trash, water, and stormwater bills will rise by about $46 a year starting Oct. 1. The change is tied to a 2.2% consumer price index and will help update city code for more predictable future adjustments.  ABC7

  • The Parkinson’s Association of Southwest Florida is hosting a free PD Talk Zoom Series this July to help people learn about Parkinson’s disease.   • Carolina Panthers linebacker Claudin Cherelus will host his first youth camp at Golden Gate High on June 21 — aiming to inspire Southwest Florida youth — and the camp reached its capacity of 125 players just three days after the announcement. The 26-year-old Golden Gate alum overcame setbacks on his way to the NFL and will share his journey — offering guidance to local kids — to spark their ambitions.  Naples Daily News
  • Eva Lye sank a clutch birdie on the final hole to win the South Florida Junior PGA Championship on June 17 at Stonebridge Country Club in Boca Raton. The First Baptist Academy graduate edged Alexandra Phung by one stroke and will represent the South Florida PGA at the 49th Boys & Girls Junior PGA Championships from July 29 to Aug. 1—adding to her recent Girls Golfer of the Year honor.  Naples Daily News
