COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Naples Salvation Army saw a 175% rise in food assistance needs as it distributed 20,000 pounds of food in May and 30,000 pounds in June, serving 600 families compared to 400 before. Captain Conley said many first-time clients, including some middle-class workers, now need support & the organization is urging more food donations and volunteers.  Fox 4

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 27-year-old Pine Island bicyclist was critically injured after being hit by a pickup on the 16-mile bike path on Jan. 27, and fatal bicycle crashes have risen in Lee and Collier counties. Naples police and the Naples Pathways Coalition are now offering free safety gear and urging stricter speed limit enforcement—actions aimed at protecting local riders from further harm.  Naples Daily News

  • Naples police are searching for 15-year-old Grace Kelly Schuldt who left her home on the 700 block of 12th Street North on Wednesday between 8 and 9:20 a.m. riding a silver Trek Verve bicycle + she is described as having dirty blonde hair with purple-dyed ends, blue eyes, standing about 5 feet 3 inches tall and may be wearing a black shirt, black shorts and black shoes.  NBC2

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On June 16, CROW broke ground on the new Harkey Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Complex in Sanibel after losing its previous facility during Hurricane Ian. The state-of-the-art center—featuring advanced tanks and filtration systems—is expected to be completed early 2026 to help care for sea turtles facing threats like pollution and habitat loss.  Florida Weekly

  • Marco Island City Manager Mike McNees spoke after Monday's city council meeting when Chairman Eric Brechnitz called for his dismissal by raising 18 concerns about FEMA grants reporting—McNees said an upcoming auditor meeting will address any issues—and stressed that the audit is clean with no fraud.  WINK News
  • Marco Island officials clarified that a report suggesting over $1 million in uncollected code fines was mistaken—Finance Director Guillermo Polanco’s data had included unbilled permit estimates and showed $1.6 million invoiced with only $12,000 collected by June.
