- ➤ Today, hunters begin the Florida Python Challenge, a 10-day event to remove invasive Burmese pythons and win over $25,000 in prizes. Veteran hunter Amy Siewe said she felt a python bite like a mouthful of hypodermic needles — a reminder to handle the snakes with caution. News-Press
- ➤ The 2025 Florida Python Challenge starts today at 12:01 a.m. and runs until July 20 as participants remove invasive Burmese pythons for prizes over $25,000. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is testing new infrared drone technology—an effort to better spot the pythons and protect native wildlife. News-Press
- ➤ More than a dozen neighbors attended a mosquito control meeting Thursday to oppose the district’s use of chemical insecticides like Naled on schools and personal properties in Collier County. - ➤ Attorney General James Uthmeier proposed building a migrant detention center at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport on June 19—raising environmental concerns about its location near Big Cypress National Preserve and endangered panther breeding areas. Conservationist Benji Studt warned that using FEMA funds for the project’s estimated $450 million per year cost could disrupt water flows critical to Everglades restoration and urged residents to contact their elected officials.
