CRIME NEWS

  • Lee Circuit Judge Bruce Kyle sentenced 22-year-old Cameron Williams to life for fatally shooting 21-year-old Damari Anthony Ali in Lehigh Acres after luring him with accomplice Dayrian Howard, who will face trial on Aug. 25 – the murder occurred on May 3.  News-Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Lee County spent over $22.5 million on improvements at JetBlue Park and Lee Health Sports Complex where the Red Sox and Twins hold spring training, and a study showed fans spent nearly $69 million in local tourism since 2018—county officials say tax revenue from visitors and team contributions will support year-round events.  WINK News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The 2025 Florida Python Challenge began on July 11 and will end on July 20 as teams work hard to remove invasive Burmese pythons from local areas. Officials say the event aims to protect native wildlife and natural habitats—efforts that could benefit Naples’ ecosystems.  Naples Daily News
  • Today, the National Hurricane Center is tracking a low-pressure system offshore that has a 30% chance of tropical development — Naples and Collier County will see heavy rain, potential localized flooding, and dangerous rip currents as it moves westward into the Gulf.  Naples Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A special meeting was held on Marco Island after a motion to fire City Manager Mike McNees was made last week. Council members and an auditor addressed concerns about FEMA grants and presented the city’s financial report before a separate session to decide his future.  WINK News
  • The Marco Island city council did not agree to accept the city manager’s resignation after Chairman Eric Brechnitz advised him to step down—council members clashed over ethics and proper process—and a separate meeting is set to decide his fate.  WINK News
  • The eighth annual Operation Southern Slow Down campaign was launched across Florida Monday—led by FDOT and FHP—to lower speed-related crashes through stricter speed limit enforcement and safety messages. The effort works with law enforcement partners in several states to remind drivers of key safety rules and help reduce traffic injuries and fatalities.  WGCU
