- ➤ A Collier County deputy rescued Kathy Sahasaylo from a community pond after she slipped during lawn work—he followed her call as she clung to poles—and she later thanked him with homemade rice bags to help ease his back pain. WINK News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Authorities are seeking Justin Schaeffer, 30, in North Fort Myers after he violated his probation linked to charges of stealing snacks and possessing fentanyl; he failed to meet with his probation officer after a June conviction and has 18 prior arrests (5'10" and 175 lbs). ABC7
- ➤ A Naples man, Antonio Licout, was arrested in Colorado on July 11 and extradited to Florida for the April 10 shooting of 18-year-old Aaliyah Gonzalez near Airport-Pulling Road North and Ponce De Leon Drive—he now faces charges including second-degree murder and other felonies. WINK News

- ➤ The Everglades Foundation released a report that showed the wetlands have an annual economic impact of $31.5 billion — the report comes as interest grows around the new Alligator Alcatraz detention center that opened this month. The Naples Press
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Scientists discovered a new cell in Burmese python intestines that dissolves prey skeletons and controls calcium absorption—research using captive juvenile pythons on different diets was detailed in the Journal of Experimental Biology. The study may help improve efforts to manage this invasive species in Southwest Florida. News-Press

- ➤ Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Acting Assistant Secretary of the Army D. Lee Forsgren signed an MOU on July 18 at the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort to build the nearly $4 billion Everglades Agricultural Area Reservoir by 2029—part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan.
