COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lee County Domestic Animal Services is teaming with the Lee County Sheriff's Office to host a kitten adoption event during kitten season. The event will be held on Aug. 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Miromar Outreach Center—10801 Corkscrew Road, Suite 190, in Estero with adoption fees waived for approved applications.  NBC2
  • The Wilson & Johnson Private Foundation awarded $500,000 to the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens to renovate the historic Safari Canyon Theater stage into the new Wilson Family Stage, which will host up to three animal shows a day. The updated venue with modern animal habitats and education technology is expected to open in early 2026 — offering a refreshed experience for visitors.  Life In Naples

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Police confirmed that an 85-year-old man died while swimming at Lowdermilk Park on Gulf Shore Blvd North Friday evening when authorities received a call around 7:30 p.m. reporting him missing & resuscitation efforts failed.  Fox 4

CRIME NEWS

  • Antonio Licout, 19, is accused of second-degree murder in the April 10 shooting of 18-year-old Aaliyah Gonzalez in Naples and fled to Colorado, where he was arrested on July 11—he will remain in custody without bond and face arraignment on Aug. 11.  News-Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Starting Aug. 1, Florida will begin a month-long back-to-school sales tax holiday that lets shoppers avoid tax on clothes under $100, school supplies under $50, learning aids under $30, and personal computers under $1,500 — a change approved as part of a larger tax package that also exempts items like batteries and portable generators — with projected annual savings of $217 million for consumers. This tax relief, popular with retailers, follows a standoff in the Legislature and builds on previous tax holiday practices.  News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida’s spiny lobster sport season begins Wednesday, July 30 and ends Thursday, July 31, allowing anglers to harvest up to 12 lobsters per day except in Monroe County and Biscayne National Park, where the limit is 6. Anglers must use a measuring device to verify lobsters have a carapace longer than 3 inches and must land them whole (tail separation and use of damaging devices are banned).  Naples Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lee Health has partnered with DispatchHealth to bring same-day in-home care for patients who do not require an emergency department visit — the service is available daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. including holidays — and treats conditions such as heat exhaustion, severe flu and minor injuries.  Naples Daily News
