  • Gulf Coast Humane Society featured Calvin, a lively 9-month-old terrier mix on this week's Mutts and Meows. He spent two months at the shelter after being brought in from Lee County Domestic Animal Services for treatment of a skin condition—he is healing well and awaits an active home.  NBC2
  • St. Matthew's House will unveil its newly renovated Boutique Thrift Store at 2601 Airport Road today at 10 a.m.—the reopening follows a nearly four-month closure after an accident injured six people and will feature special promotions throughout the week.  WINK News
  • Valerie's House, a local nonprofit, awarded $37,000 in scholarships to 14 grieving teenagers—each award ranges from $1,000 to $2,500 and may be renewed for up to three years to help them succeed after their loss.  News-Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Allegiant Travel Company announced seven new nonstop routes from RSW that will begin in November and connect 12 cities nationally — discount one-way fares start at $49 to celebrate the launch. Flights from Fort Myers to Allentown start November 13 while additional routes from Fort Myers to Appleton, Des Moines, Sarasota/Bradenton, Toledo, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Wayne, New Orleans, Punta Gorda, Nashville and Gulf Shores are scheduled between November 20 and November 21.  WINK News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rising ocean temperatures and nutrient-rich waters have fueled a record sargassum bloom that began piling on Florida beaches in March—31 million metric tons were estimated in April—and the rotting seaweed now produces a strong rotten egg odor that may block sea turtle hatchlings from reaching the sea.  News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawyers have filed a temporary restraining order against the Alligator Alcatraz detention center in the Everglades as detainees are held without charges and barred from meeting attorneys—Florida officials defend the facility while a briefing schedule leads to an in-person hearing on Aug. 18. The virtual session in Miami on Monday raised constitutional concerns about detainee rights.  WGCU
