COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 100 retirees at Vi at Bentley Village helped pack over 260 backpacks with school supplies and raised over $8,000 to support underserved families in Collier and Lee counties through their 14-year tradition known as Operation Backpack. The backpacks were delivered to local nonprofits including Grace Place, Youth Haven, the Guadalupe Center, and New Horizons — ensuring students had the essentials for the new school year.  Fox 4

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Hurricane Center updated its forecast on August 7 to predict 13–18 named tropical systems (with 5–9 hurricanes and 2–5 major hurricanes), keeping expectations high for a busy season and noting that one storm has already formed ahead of schedule with no hurricanes so far. Residents are urged to review their plans as warmer ocean temperatures and weak winds may lead to rapid storm intensification.  WGCU
  • Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve covers 110,000 acres and 40% of Collier County’s coastline while offering research, wildlife management and environmental learning at its center on 300 Tower Road in Naples. The reserve, about nine miles from Marco Island and 18 miles from downtown, hosts eco-tours, kayaking and classes—featuring aquariums, touch tanks, exhibits and a butterfly garden.  News-Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Collier County deputies now have 500 donated LifeVac devices on every vehicle, provided by the Cassata Foundation and the LifeVac CEO, to help clear airways when someone is choking. The lifesaving tool—first used successfully at Mason Classical Academy this year—adds to the agencies’ existing emergency equipment.  ABC7
  • Avow Kids offers free grief and loss support to children ages 5 to 17 in Southwest Florida as they return to school. The program provides one-on-one counseling, peer groups and seasonal camps—led by trained professionals at a Naples center and local schools—to help kids cope with major life changes.  Life In Naples
