CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Pineapple farming started in the 1860s when pioneers grew fruit in Key West and Merritt Island before expanding to Fort Myers, Naples, Bonita Springs, and Marco Island. The industry grew rapidly after the Florida East Coast Railway reached the area—Marco Island now honors its heritage with an annual Pineapple Day. News-Press
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Nine Collier County Public Schools have named new principals for the school year that begins today, with six elementary and three high schools choosing leaders who bring 14 to over 25 years of experience + strong ties to the district. The new principals, many of whom have served in other roles, will work to keep the schools strong and support student success. Naples Daily News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Residents in St. James City reported that summer rains caused flooding which left roads impassable and washed yard debris into streets, raising concerns for vulnerable neighbors. Marco Island residents noted that the rare floods cleared within an hour as cleanup crews removed the debris. WINK News
- ➤ Tropical Depression Four formed on August 10 and is moving west-northwest (with winds of 35 mph); it is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Erin by midweek and should remain east of Florida. Local forecasts advise residents to stay updated as the storm develops. NBC2
