- ➤ Elvin Alonso, a high school senior with a passion for cutting hair, received an $8,000 scholarship from Barber Academy by Sean Casey to join a six-month restricted barber program—he must raise an extra $4,000 for the full course—and he began his training in May. - ➤ Erin remained a weak tropical storm as of early Wednesday in Fort Myers—forecasters said it would gradually get stronger as it moved over warmer waters. A tropical wave over the Yucatan was expected to form into a brief storm in the southwest Gulf before moving onshore in Mexico with no threat to local areas. NBC2
- ➤ A federal judge heard closing arguments Wednesday morning on the environmental review for the Alligator Alcatraz facility in the Everglades—construction has been on hold for two weeks and may be stopped indefinitely if the ruling favors the environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe. - ➤ Collier County reopened the 951 Collier Boulevard Boating Park today after a major renovation that began in February. The facility—located north of the Marco Island Jolley Bridge—now features new boat launch structures, floating docks, a seawall, timber pilings and a repaved parking lot with a $10 launch fee and $10 parking fee unless a free permit is shown.
