ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Aug. 13, a fire on Upper Captiva Island destroyed a home, killed two dogs, and injured resident Richard Taylor and his caregiver Sandra Patton; firefighters and about 20 volunteers used fireboats, a specialized engine, and a helicopter to rescue the injured—Fire Commissioner Duncan Rosen said the remote, sandy roads and lack of hydrants made fighting the blaze difficult. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Hurricane Erin strengthened to Category 4 with 130 mph winds as of early Saturday and is expected to remain major as it turns north before reaching the Bahamas—keeping direct impacts away from our area. The storm will produce dangerous seas with wave heights up to 35 feet in the Atlantic while 10-foot waves may affect the east coast next week. NBC2
- ➤ On Saturday, Aug. 16, Hurricane Erin intensified to a Category 5 storm with 160 mph winds and moved north of the Leeward Islands – Florida officials warn our beaches will face dangerous surf and rip currents from Aug. 18 to 21.
