- ➤ Collier Community Foundation and Habitat for Humanity have built a new home elevated 10 feet above sea level for Naples couple Warren and Diane Segal after Hurricane Ian made their previous home uninhabitable—this home is part of Habitat Collier’s Raze, Raise, Rebuild initiative and comes with a small interest-free mortgage repayment. - ➤ Authorities are searching for Michael Brown—40—wanted for violating probation after he tried to throw a bag of fentanyl out of his car window during a routine traffic stop in Bokeelia; he lacked a valid driver’s license and has seven prior arrests for evidence tampering, drugs and DUI. NBC2
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Monday night, a federal judge denied the state's appeal to stop the closure of Alligator Alcatraz in Collier County—trucks carrying generators and a bus of people were seen leaving the facility. Authorities have until Oct. 20 to remove fences, lights, and other equipment while protesters documented the dismantling. NBC2
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Florida Department of Health reported four new cases of Vibrio vulnificus infection on August 21, raising the total to 20 cases and 5 deaths in counties such as Collier and Hillsborough. The bacteria, which can be contracted by eating raw seafood or exposing open cuts to brackish water, can cause rapid tissue damage—health officials urge prompt medical attention for symptoms.
