CULTURE NEWS

  • Executive Director Frank Verpoorten announced that the Naples Art Institute will host a traveling Rembrandt exhibition next year. The show will display works by Rembrandt — a famous artist known for his use of light and shadow.  WGCU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Middle schoolers from Lee, Collier and Charlotte counties attended a marine science summer camp held in July by The Water School at Florida Gulf Coast University, where they learned about local water habitats and used seine nets in Estero Bay and on Little Hickory Island—experiencing hands-on lab and field work. The camp, connected to Kimberly’s Reef, helped students understand the importance of coastal environments.  WGCU
  • Since 2015, the Immokalee Foundation has awarded 'fun money' scholarships to college students who complete their first semester and write an essay on spending $500 purely for fun—a program created in honor of Dr. Eghrari’s late wife, Isabella that has supported over 130 students in exploring new experiences such as trips to Chicago and Nashville.  WGCU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs approved a $74M grant today to build a state veterans nursing home on the former Golden Gate Golf Course in Collier County. County officials said designs will be completed by November 7 and groundbreaking is planned for June 2026 — the campus could open by mid to late 2028 nearly a year and a half early.  NBC2
  • Lee County Utilities (LCU) has issued a boil-water notice to 450 residences and five businesses in Wildcat Run in Estero due to a water main break, and all water must be boiled for one minute before use for drinking, cooking, or cleaning; the notice will be lifted on Friday, Aug. 29.  ABC7
  • State regulators finalized agreements on August 26th with American Coastal Insurance Co.—TypTap Insurance Co.—and Sutton National Insurance Co. to pay fines for failing to follow claims-handling laws after hurricanes. American Coastal will pay $400,000 for 36 unappointed adjuster instances and 34 delayed claims; TypTap faces a $150,000 fine for 27 delayed acknowledgements; and Sutton must pay $50,000 for 34 instances of using improperly assigned adjusters.  WGCU
  • At a special budget meeting on Monday, Council voted four to three to adopt a 1.24 millage rate after overcoming technical difficulties that forced them to elect a temporary chair—staff explained that the lower rate would require significant budget cuts and further meetings in September will finalize the budget.  Coastal Breeze News

  • Southwest Florida’s top 14 high school golfers—7 girls and 7 boys—will compete this fall, with returning stars from Community School of Naples such as Spencer Ives building on strong tournament performances in Collier and Lee counties.  Naples Daily News
