  • Residents in Island Park experienced flooding during Hurricane Helene and now face added challenges as Hurricane Milton is expected to hit within 24 hours—Blake Drako and his family moved their belongings upstairs to lessen damage. Many locals filed insurance claims and learned that even small amounts of floodwater can cause costly repairs.  WINK News
  • Cole McGinnis died Wednesday, Sept. 24 after fighting a rare brain tumor—his family said funds will now go toward funeral and medical costs. The fundraiser will be held Monday, October 6 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Seed to Table on Immokalee Road in Naples.  Fox 4

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Norton Museum of Art will open an exhibit titled 'Art and Life in Rembrandt’s Time: Masterpieces from The Leiden Collection' on October 25, where visitors can see over 70 works by 27 artists—17 of which are by Rembrandt—showing life as it was 400 years ago. Artis-Naples’ Baker Museum will also introduce a new exhibit by Linling Lu in November that blends modern art with classic influences.  Florida Weekly

  • The Immokalee Foundation received a $50,000 donation from the Suncoast Credit Union Foundation to support its nationally recognized Career Pathways program that prepares middle and high school students for careers in fields like Business Management, Education, and Healthcare—adding postsecondary scholarship support for students completing the program.  Florida Weekly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tropical Storm Humberto is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane and become a major hurricane over the weekend while Invest 94L will develop into a tropical depression near the Bahamas in a couple of days; forecasters note that a rare Fujiwhara effect may occur between the storms — but no direct threats loom for Naples, where showers, thunderstorms and temperatures in the low 90s are expected.  Naples Daily News
  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported on Thursday that leatherback turtles made 2,021 nests statewide and green turtles made 61,708 nests as of Aug. 31 — the second-highest green turtle total ever recorded in Florida. Loggerhead turtles had 100,860 nests and Kemp’s Ridley had 10 nests — marking 2025 as a record year for sea turtle nesting.  NBC2
