  • 1942 Mexican Grill, a new restaurant and bar in North Naples, opened its doors recently to serve creative & traditional Mexican dishes with a signature taco flight for first-time visitors. The eatery quickly drew interest from locals seeking a fresh dining option.  The Naples Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Florida has retired 14 of the 99 Atlantic hurricane names that start with I, showing that storms like Ian have left a mark on the coast—residents remember the heavy impacts while staying alert for further storms this season. Not every I storm is damaging, and experts note that hurricane activity rises as the season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30.  NBC2

FINANCE NEWS

  • A Naples woman from Bank of America uses her financial expertise to teach men in addiction recovery how to build better money habits—she leads an eight-week financial literacy course for Justin's Place Recovery Program at St. Matthew's House every Wednesday. Since the course launched in April, many students have improved their credit scores, opened their first bank accounts, and set up a savings plan—milestones that mark progress in their recovery.  ABC7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Florida Department of Transportation said the northbound I-75 ramp at Pine Ridge Road will be closed overnight from 8 p.m. on Oct. 1 to 6 a.m. on Oct. 2 for drainage installation as part of Collier County’s first Diverging Diamond Interchange project—motorists must use Golden Gate Parkway as an alternate route.  News-Press
  • On September 18th, Collier County Commissioners voted 3—2 to keep the current millage so that voters will pay a little more on their taxes next year. This decision gives county officials some relief as debates over Conservation Collier funds use continue.  The Naples Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • FSIS issued a public health alert yesterday for meals sold at Walmart and Trader Joe's that are ready to eat and contain precooked pasta at risk of listeria contamination. The labels list best if used by dates from Sept 22 to Oct 1 and tests confirmed the pasta was contaminated—consumers in Naples are urged to discard the products while further testing continues.  WGCU

  • Local diners can enjoy Sizzle Dining, a program with 127 restaurants in Lee and Collier counties offering set menus that support Blessings in a Backpack + the event will end on September 30. New eateries including On the Bay, Marina Cantina, cheesesteaks.com in Bonita Springs and Philly Pretzel Factory will open soon with soft launches from Sept. 26 to Nov. 3.  News-Press

  • Community School of Naples won a 38—35 district football game against St. John Neumann on Friday with a last-second 21—yard field goal by Hudson Switken. The Seahawks built an early 35—21 lead with strong plays from Jayvian Tanelus and Jaden Phillips before Neumann rallied late but fell short in an instant classic.  NBC2
  • Cypress Lake and Estero clashed Friday, Sept. 26 in a pivotal Class 3A-District 13 football game—both teams entered with 3-2 records as Cypress Lake rode a three-game winning streak while Estero relied on its strong passing attack led by junior quarterback Maddox Stewart.   • Naples High won 21-0 over Dunbar on Friday night at Staver Field—junior running back Jamar Jerome scored three touchdowns from 43, 27, and 14 yards to help secure the district race, while the defense held Dunbar scoreless with key turnovers.  NBC2
  • Charlie Woods, a Benjamin School junior and son of Tiger Woods, shot a 4-under 68 in the first round of the West Coast High School Championship at TwinEagles in Naples on Sept. 26—tying for second with top competitors.
