COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The STARability Foundation received a donation from Sharon Seevers—owner of Goodness for Pets in North Naples and co-trustee of the Seevers Family Foundation—that will cover half of its annual scholarship budget and help many families access life-changing opportunities at Trailblazer Academy. The foundation said the gift reflects hope and support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  ABC7
  • At The Collaboratory in Fort Myers on September 29, 35 women met to write letters and send 160 notecards as part of Hype Chicks Squad led by Erica Castner—now nearly 600 members who regularly share stories and build community.  NBC2
  • Stone crabbers gathered for the annual blessing of the stone crab fleet on Sept. 27 in Everglades City where local clergy led prayers at Camellia Street Grill—crabbers can set traps starting Oct. 5 as stone crab season begins Oct. 15.  Naples Daily News
  • Naples Zoo will host Boo at the Zoo, a family-friendly Halloween event that will transform the park into a magical movie scene with trick-or-treating for kids 12 and under and costumed characters. The event will take place from Oct. 10 through Oct. 12 and again from Oct. 17 through Oct. 19 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.  WINK News

CRIME NEWS

  • Lee County deputies warn of a scam call in which a caller claims you missed a court date and demands money—deputies advise hanging up immediately and not sharing personal information.  Fox 4
  • A judge denied Naples mayor Teresa Heitmann’s motion to suppress dashcam video evidence from her DUI arrest on August 28th—evidence that showed her admitting to driving and failing field sobriety tests despite her claim of an unlawful stop without a warrant.  News-Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • St. Matthew’s House debuts Faces Beyond Homelessness—an exhibit that shows 10 portraits by Naples artist Wendy Wagner capturing journeys from homelessness to hope. The exhibit will open Oct. 10 at the Wendy Wagner Fine Art Gallery in the Naples Art District and run through November—with extended hours on Nov. 5.  Florida Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Secretary Noem expedited federal aid totaling more than $11 million to rebuild a historic Naples pier after a donor intervened, helping city officials overcome months of delays. She flew to the site to inspect the efforts—raising concerns about potential political favoritism in disaster aid.  WGCU

SPORTS NEWS

  • The News-Press and Naples Daily News held a poll of 11 high school boys athletes from Sept. 22-27—local readers voted for the top performer to win a BSN Sports T-shirt and a USA Today tote bag. Last week's winner was CSN cross country runner Hudson Casto who received 45% of the vote.  Naples Daily News
