CULTURE NEWS

  • Naples and nearby areas will host several events this weekend with Parrothead fest at Margaritaville Resort from Oct. 3-5 offering boat drinks and live bands, the annual RV show at Paradise Coast Sports Complex from Oct. 2-4, a moon walk at Rookery Bay on Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m., the Manhattan Short Film Festival on Marco Island on Oct. 3-4, and 'Carrie: The Musical' running in Bonita Springs from Oct. 3-12.  Naples Daily News
  • Rabbi David Arias from Temple Judea in Fort Myers said that the war in Israel has deepened the pain felt by Jewish communities as they prepare to fast for Yom Kippur, which begins at sunset today. He compared the 25-hour fast to the long hardship experienced by hostages in Gaza—comments made during an interfaith meeting.  WGCU
  • Collier arts groups lost about 100,000 international visitors due to a 10% drop mainly from Canada and Britain—this loss led the Collier Commission to approve $5 million in supplemental funding for the Tourist Development Council to bring in new international guests.  WGCU
  • The 17th Annual Naples International Film Festival begins Oct. 23 with an opening tribute to short films called 'Opening Night Shorts—Unexpected Outcomes.' During its four-day run, the festival will show over 60 films and host more than 25 filmmakers for Q&As as it closes Oct. 26 with a live concert of The Princess Bride featuring the Naples Philharmonic.  WGCU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Conservancy of Southwest Florida will host the RedSnook Catch and Release Charity Tournament from October 24 to 26 in Naples, Goodland and Chokoloskee to raise funds for water protection. The event will support conservation efforts—last year it raised nearly $210,000 for programs including mangrove monitoring and education.  News-Press
  • Since 2013, Naples-based Conservancy of Southwest Florida’s python hunters have removed 20 tons of Burmese pythons from the western Everglades to protect native wildlife. The team uses radio-tagged scout snakes to locate breeding females so that thousands of eggs do not hatch—reducing the invasive threat.  News-Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • The community held its ribbon cutting Tuesday in Naples as GardenView at Moorings Park opened as the nation’s first AI-assisted living facility. The 23-unit facility uses smart devices to unlock doors automatically—tracking residents’ safety, detecting falls, and alerting caregivers, with first residents expected to move in November.  ABC7

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Local gardeners grow Seminole and calabaza pumpkins that thrive in Southwest Florida’s heat and offer a local twist on fall traditions. The pumpkins need little fertilizer and irrigation and can be harvested in as few as three months — a practical option for home cooks.  News-Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tom Stickney, a full-time golf instructor with over 30 years of experience, explains that players must keep their eyes over the ball to see the line and make a smoother putting stroke—he recommends dropping the ball from the bridge of the nose every time players practice putting to build a solid habit.
