- ➤ Big Cypress National Preserve will turn 51 in less than a week and was established on Oct. 11—created when conservationists, hunters, environmentalists, and local tribes reached a compromise to protect Everglades lands. The preserve covers 729,000 acres and is known for a detention center nicknamed Alligator Alcatraz and for supporting endangered species like the Florida panther. Naples Daily News

- ➤ Today, the city announced road closures and projects to improve storm water systems and resurface roads. 5th Street South will be closed from 4th Avenue South to 5th Avenue South for repairs (until Oct. 17) while 2nd Street South will close in sections from 6th to 10th Avenue for manhole repairs (detoured via 3rd Street South) as a resurfacing project covers 14 roads in Park Shore, the Moorings, Old Naples, Port Royal and Royal Harbor.
